WiFi HotSpot – FAQs Q. What is Wi-Fi ? Short for ‘Wireless Fidelity’. A term for certain types of wireless local area networks (WLAN) that use specifications conforming to IEEE 802.11b/g. WiFi has gained acceptance in many environments as an alternative to a wired LAN. Many airports, hotels, hospitals, educational & research institutes and other services offer public access to WiFi networks so people can log onto the Internet and receive emails on the move. These locations are known as HotSpots. Q. How do I access Wi-Fi ? To access WiFi, you need to have a WiFi enabled device of Laptop or PDA. These devices can send and receive data wirelessly from any location equipped with WiFi access. The data is transmitted over a radio signal from an 'Access Point' installed within a WiFi Zone. You need to purchase a WiFONIC WiFi prepaid scratch card, from the hotel reception or any authorised dealer of WiFONIC. This prepaid card will allow you to access the WiFONIC WiFi service through an exclusive username and password. Q. How do the speeds on WiFi ? Your WiFONIC HotSpot speed will be from 512 Kbps upto 8 Mbps. The WiFi access devices are capable of supporting speeds from 11 Mbps to 300 Mbps depends on the Laptop model using with. Q. Where can I access WiFONIC WiFi ? The list of locations where WiFONIC HotSpot services are available is given in the HotSpot locator. Q. Where can I get Award winning Firefox web browser ? Download from http://www.mozilla.com/ Q. What is a PCMCIA (wireless access) card ? Some laptops or PDAs are not enabled to access WiFi service. The PCMCIA card which is a wireless networking card enables these devices to access WiFi. Q. How to log-in to your account ? From within an WiFONIC HotSpot service location, launch your Internet browser. Your browser will automatically bring up a log-in screen. Enter your User Name and Password and click Login. Remember that your User Name and Password are case sensitive. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see the welcome page with your account information. At this point, you can connect to other resources and sites on the Internet. Q. How to log-out of your account ? If you have a pop-up blocker software program installed on your computer you will need to log off. If you do not have a pop-up blocker software program installed, you will see your Account Status window once you have successfully logged in. This page has a logout button. When you are ready to leave the WiFONIC HotSpot network, simply click Logout in the pop up window. Go to http://hotspot.wifonic.com for status detail and logout button. Q. Once I log onto the WiFi Service, what do I do next ? After you log on to the WiFi Service, just launch your browser and start surfing. Q. Can I save my time for later use? Yes, you may save time for later use, provided you logout when you are ready to leave. Your Account status window gives you details of the time allowed for your Plan, the time you are online, balance time and the date when your plan expires. Q. If I close the Account Session Status page, will I lose my connection? No. When you close the session status page, the page will close but you will not be logged off the WiFi Service. But your plans are metered and your time may get elapsed. We recommend that you do not close this window. Q. How can I tell how many minutes I've used? The Account Status page that is displayed as soon as you login to the hotspot will display the length of your current session, including the time you logged in. Q. My User Name and Password does not work, what should I do? There are several factors you can check if your User Name and or Password does not work: Please make sure that you put hyphen(-) in between of User Name exactly written in scratch card. Make sure you are using the same User Name & Password with the same system. Ensure your computer has a connection with the WiFONIC HotSpot. Q. Where do I go for help while I'm in the Hot Spot? Each Hot Spot location has a WiFi portal online help available. If you cannot find the answer to your questions in that help list and you have not found the answer to your question on this web site, contact the WiFONIC HotSpot administrator or contact our 24x7 Helpdesk . Q. How do I purchase additional time? To purchase additional time, you need to purchase a new coupon at WiFONIC HotSpot / Authorised Reseller. Q. How does billing work? Service is purchased as contiguous blocks of time. Billing is performed on a "count-down" basis like a common parking meter. The meter time starts when you login for the first time. Q. If I lost or forgot my User Name or password, what do I do? If you have lost or forgotten your User Name or password, submit an online request from the login page or contact our 24x7 Helpdesk. Q. Do I need to change my browser settings to access the internet ? Our ‘No-configuration' policy ensures that you do not need to make any changes to your existing browser settings. Even if your browser is pre-configured with a proxy server, you will still be able to access the internet from any of our WiFONIC HotSpots. Q. Can I use my POP3 e-mail account from within the WiFONIC HotSpot? Yes, we allow POP3 access. You need not make any changes to your e-mail software, or to your mail server settings. Just launch your e - mail software and use it to send & receive mails. Q. Can I access the internet using a palmtop? Yes. Most PDAs today have integrated WiFi capabilities. You can use these PDAs at WiFi HotSpots to browse the Internet. You can also use WiFi enabled smart phones at our HotSpots. Please check with your PDA manufacturer if your PDA has WiFi capabilities. Q. Are there any restrictions on data transfer? There are currently no set limits on the amount of data you can send and receive. You can continue browsing, and sending and receiving mail, so long as your usage time does not expire. Q. Can I use a VPN at the HotSpot? We do not have any restrictions on VPN usage. Once you're successfully connected to the Internet, you can launch your VPN software. However, please note that your VPN software may have specific settings that may need to be changed at different locations. If you have difficulty in establishing or maintaining a VPN connection, please contact your network administrator for assistance. Q. Can I use a personal firewall? We do not have any restrictions on the usage of personal firewalls. However, please note that having high security settings on the firewall could disrupt your internet connection. If you face problems with your firewall enabled, please try lowering the security settings. Please contact the software vendor for assistance with the personal firewall settings. Q. Do I need to change my IP settings to connect? Our ‘No-configuration' policy ensures that you needn't change your IP settings to connect. Our system automatically assigns you a temporary IP for the duration of your session, using which you're connected to the internet. Q. How can I assign IP in MAC ? 1. Click the Apple menu(upper right-hand corner of the screen) 3. On System Preferences window click on Network 4. On the Network select the following Location = Automatic 5. Select manual option for Configure IPv4. Now you can enter the static IP address you want to set for this computer. After entering the details click on Apply Now button to save the settings. |
